The baseline and target you set for an Indicator is used to calculate your percentage progress for that Indicator. Determining your baseline is a great way to represent where you are at currently, and determining your target is a great way to communicate where you are going.
Setting a target is often more challenging. One essential aspect of tracking progress towards your goals is being honest that you will not always reach all of the targets you set for Indicators as quickly as initially anticipated. If you are hitting every target you set, then you are likely not setting ambitious enough targets to address the fullness of your mission. Sharing about your progress, challenges, and lessons learned can strengthen stakeholder relationships and decision making.
You can hold off on setting a target and baseline for an Indicator, and still add progress updates and Stories to the Indicator. The percentage progress for the Indicator will default to showing 0% if you don’t set a target and baseline.
